This Week in Math and Science

Hello Grade 8's! Last week in science, we took a look at the particle model of matter, viscosity, density and buoyancy. Slides shown in class can be viewed by clicking here his link . Make sure you know and review these! On Thursday, we looked at the density of different substances in the creation of our density tower. We found that the most dense substance, corn syrup, sank to the bottom, below the other substances. This was followed by dish soap, water, vegetable oil and rubbing alcohol, the least dense substance, resting on top. On Friday,  buoyancy was introduced by Bill Nye . This week, we will continue to look into buoyancy and compressibility. Our density tower - Rubbing alcohol (dyed red), Vegetable Oil (yellow/white), Water (dyed blue), Dish Soap (green), Corn Syrup (brown). This is what we should have expected from our Coke density investigation today. Why do you think our regular Coke can floated when we tried it in class? Last week in math, we looked...

Week of Oct 21 - 25

Hi All! This week, we will be wrapping up our Urban Legend podcasts. As some of us experienced today, working with Garage Band and iMovie can sometimes create a bit of frustration... Goals for Friday (Oct 25), are to have AT LEAST an audio recording DONE and uploaded into  Google Drive. Some people finished everything today (good on ya!) This might require others of you to record on your own time. We'll also be starting our Exhibit inquiries this week. Everyone found out today which Japanese time periods they'll be researching -- further instruction will be given Weds/Thurs. Reminder that by Friday afternoon, all three documents (Edo Expert articles + Meiji + Change is Coming) in the Google Share folders, are to be read. Based on what we've covered in class, notes, and now your additional readings, everyone should be able to confidently describe the changes that occurred during Edo, as well as, provide pertinent details on what led to the Meiji Restoration. ...Th...

Scheduled Fire Drill - Tomorrow

Hi 8s, Please be advised that tomorrow, Thursday Oct 17, a fire drill is scheduled to occur around 1:30pm. The drill is planned and the administration has told us that it is ok to share this information with you. Let's remember to present our most positive behaviour and show TMC how amazing the Gr. 8s are! Reminder: If you have your cell phone on you at the time of the drill, it is to be in your pocket and NOT in your hand when you are lined up. Please come see myself or Mr. Badr should you have any questions about protocol. Otherwise, I trust you are all aware of the expectations and we will receive positive feedback this time around. -Mrs. Lockyer

This week in Math/Sci

Hello Grade 8's I hope everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving weekend! This week in math we will be continuing to work with surface area of 3-dimensional shapes. This will lead up to a surface area quiz on Thursday, Oct. 17 which will cover nets, squares, triangular prisms, pyramids and word problems . A reminder that the L-Blocks worksheet will be due on Thursday, Oct. 17 . Here are some of the equations that we have derived in class.  It will be handy to know these for Thursday. This week in science, we will look into the particle model of matter. Your journal entry on your opinion of the environmental platform of each major political party is due on Friday, Oct. 18 . Questions you need to answer can be found on the last slide of today's slideshow . It may be a short week, but we'll be able to take full advantage of it! I'll see you tomorrow, Mr. Badr

Humanities: Week of Oct 15 - Oct 18

Today we started our Edo JigSaw Focus Groups in 8-1 and 8-2! So far, we've been off to a strong start! Well done those of you who presented today. Everyone was meant to have their presentation/notes ready for today, regardless of whether or not they presented. We will attempt to wrap these JigSaws up tomorrow (Weds). There will be an ELA quiz on Friday Oct 18.  You'll need to review the following: - sentence types - clauses - subject/predicate - verbs Letter to Shogun is due Friday Oct 18.  - Typed, font 12, double spaced, printed Reminder: Please come see me prior to any due dates if you feel you will not be able to meet deadlines. Telling me the day of is unacceptable. Typically you are given time in class, so if you're not handing things in, it begs the question -- "What have you been doing?" We'll be getting into Meiji this week, as well as, starting our exhibit designs. Thanks! -Mrs. Lockyer

Math and Science Homework Due Monday and Tuesday

Hello Grade 8's, I hope you are enjoying your weekend. This week in Science , we began to look into solutions and solubility as we continued to explore dissolving. On Wednesday we tried to separate three (not-so-secret) mixtures in a lab, experimenting with some of the methods discussed in class. As promised, here are the components needed for your Mixture Separation Write Up which were shared in class today. These are due on Tuesday, October 8. Mixture Separation Lab Write Up Students who were away can email me at robadr@cbe.ab.ca . I will let you know what was in the three mixtures, and your task will be to explain how those mixtures could be separated using the separation techniques listed. This week in Math , we began to look at how to calculate surface area for a rectangular prism (cuboid) and a triangular prism. Next week we will look at surface area of a pyramid. The following worksheets were assigned and will be due for a homework check on Monday: Rectan...

Week of Sept 30 - Oct 4

Hey G8s! This week has been full on! We've extended a couple deadlines to alleviate some of the work load, however, we all need to make sure we're managing, and, using class time wisely. Thanks guys, -Mrs. Lockyer

Surface Area of a Rectangular Prism and Solubility Definitions

Hello Grade 8's! Here are the notes that were written on the board today. Steps for calculating the surface area of a rectangular prism and a cube: Definitions related to solubility: Make sure you have these in your math/science books. I'll see you tomorrow when we have a mixture separation lab! Mr. Badr
